Many of my friends have had Churros in Toronto, and allegedly there are quite a few places to try in Toronto. However, I had my very first one in Ottawa, and it was probably one of my best dessert experiences to date! La Catrina is the only churro specialist in Ottawa, located right in Byward Market.
Upon entry, the design of the establishment was very unique. On the wall to the right, a beautiful graphic completely takes the wall, showcasing astonishing colours and amazing detail. The actual place to order your churros and other yummy foods were down a set of stairs, and the main dining area was on top of it. Instantly when I entered, I can hear the sound of Mexican music which really added to the ambiance.
My partner and I were greeted by the owner, Ulises, and his wife who cordially took us to a seat in the main dining area for us to have our first churro experience. Right at the moment, I could sense that La Catrina was a huge hit in the Capital, as a huge rush of customers entered the restaurant and were in line waiting for their taste of La Catrina’s churros!
Despite having to serve other customers, Ulises and the rest of the La Catrina team worked hard to serve everyone efficiently and quickly, including myself and my partner! Before I knew it, we were giving the following items.
Chocolate and Caramel Filled Churros
Of course these churros were the staple food of La Catrina. Many of the customers were we saw enter the restaurant left with these in hand. That day, we had the chance to sample Chocolate and Caramel flavoured Churros, and I can confidently say that these churros really hit the spot! The churros were delicious and freshly made, fried to perfection and filled with just enough sweetness. I personally preferred the chocolate one because it had more of a bitter sweet taste which paired nicely with the crisp, sugary churro.
Next was an interesting sandwich like dessert, which was termed as a “yo-yo”. This dessert had nutella filling between two freshly fried churros. For me personally, I thought that this one was too sweet for my liking, however any sweet tooth Foodie Utopian out there, this will be a treat for you!
I like that it was a smaller portion, so I was still able to finish it off, however the sugar could have been toned down for me. If you love nutella and have a strong sweet tooth, this is the go-to for you!
Churro Bowl with House Made Vanilla Ice Cream
This was probably my favourite dessert of the evening – we were served a Churro Bowl which had Vanilla Ice Cream served atop a beautifully crafted bowl made entirely of Churro. I loved eating the vanilla ice cream because I can taste that it was housemade and fresh. It was perfectly cold and mixed beautifully with the crispy, fried churro bowl which I made a point to devour. Truly a stellar dessert and can be a good option to have after a dinner date or outing with friends!
If you thought that having all the dessert was more than enough, we were also given Mexican Paninis. Unfortunately, these paninis were so delicious, I didn’t get a chance to capture a picture! We had a taste of the Catrina Special which had ham, cheese and salami inside. It was perfectly toasted and great tasting. Usually I don’t crave sandwiches, but I could definitely see myself grabbing a La Catrina Panini for breakfast one day.
