Foodie Utopia is back this summer with a new excursion, featuring a neat patio spot for Torontonians on College Street. Upper Deck By Fran’s is a classic, vibrant spot with a patio sit-in for dining, whether it’s breakfast, lunch or dinner. The Upper Deck has all types of contemporary Canadian cuisine for customers to enjoy, as well as a wide selection of drinks to choose from.

My company and I were in close proximity to the University of Toronto after a condo viewing and happened to be passing by. It was such a beautiful, sunny day and we could see from the bottom looking up that the patio was filled with people eating on birch picnic tables and enjoying their meals. Determined, we made our way up some stairs and were greeted by a hostess at the landing. It was a little bit discomforting that the hostess did not take us up the remaining flight of stairs to the main patio area and just pointed towards the direction of the patio, nor was it so comforting we even had to climb stairs in the first place. I think that having the convenience of an elevator would have made the excursion slightly better – but perhaps when I came here with my partner, we simply missed the location of the elevator.

However, once we arrived there, a waitress took us to a picnic bench right beside the edge of the patio balcony area, where we had a spectacular view of College Street in the sunny afternoon time.

To start, my partner and I ordered a pitcher for the table to cool off – more specifically, their signature White Sangria which was coloured beautifully with garnishes of fruits such as oranges, blueberries, and strawberries. I could tell that it was fresh because the fruits were ripe and not a bruise could be found on them. It paired phenomenally with the white sangria – what a treat it was! Especially for the hot, summer day that we were having, it was a perfect setting to have right in the middle of downtown.

Several times we were sipping on our White Sangria the waitress was very courteous and checked up on us every once and awhile. She showed us, as well as others in her section, the utmost respect while we were enjoying each other’s company as well as the patio experience.

Closely after receiving our pitcher and exchanging some memorable moments with my company, food was served to the table! The both of us had a beautifully displayed plate of fish and chips, with classic French fries and coleslaw on the side.

Not only was the meal presentation appetizing – the food itself was very delicious. The fish and chips were prepared fried and the taste was to perfection. An individual dish had two fish filet chips, so it was sufficient to satisfy one’s stomach with proper tasting food. The fish had a great texture (soft and flaky) yet introduced an ideal amount of crisp for a beautiful finish to the meal. The coleslaw and French Fries were also great because it didn’t overwhelm the dish.

For a $14.99 retail price for the dish, I’d put the Upper Deck as a great recommendation for those who are looking for both quality taste and prime location, at a reasonable price. My company also enjoyed his meal and had his fair share of positive opinions on his lunch that afternoon. The patio was a great way to enjoy the sun, and the food was a superb compliment to the experience, along with the great company. I would definitely recommend!
